Britney stars in biopic

(Monday October 27, 2008 07:02 PM)

Britney Spears has agreed to appear in a biopic of her life, according to reports.

The US pop superstar will play herself in the movie, which is currently in pre-production.

A UK tabloid claims music video-maker Phil Griffin, who has previously worked with Amy Winehouse, has signed up to helm the project.

The film is described as being "dark and gritty" and will span every controversial moment in the singer's eventful career.

As previously reported, Britney is scheduled to release a new album, "Circus", on December 1.

University music honour for Geldof

(Monday October 27, 2008 03:22 PM)

Musician and charity campaigner Bob Geldof was struck by a sense of nostalgia as he picked up an honorary degree.

The former Boomtown Rat joined hundreds of students from the University of East London at the graduation ceremony at the city's Barbican Centre.

He joked that for him east London will always be the place he picked his daughters up after nights on the town.

He said: "East London means to me mostly where my kids go out at night, and I have to go and pick them up - Shoreditch, Dalston, those kind of places.

"I have lived in London most of my life, and east London is probably the most fluid part of London. There's a constant influx of people, immigrants like myself, so it's great to come here and see this mix of people now all amazingly well-qualified."

Geldof received his Honorary Doctorate in music after hundreds of graduates picked up their own degrees in the fields of science and technology.

He was presented with the award for his significant contribution to music and the arts, and for fighting hunger and poverty worldwide.

Bjork and Thom duet

(Monday October 27, 2008 06:41 PM)

Bjork and Thom Yorke have collaborated on a new song designed to raise awareness about climate issues in Iceland.

The Radiohead singer sings backing vocals on "Nattura", which was released digitally today.

The track is intended to promote the campaign for environmentally-friendly, sustainable green options in Bjork's home country.

"It is now more important than ever before to emphasize a respect for nature", she explained.

"I believe that profits, technological advances and working together with nature can all go hand in hand. None need to be sacrificed at the expense of the others."

Coldplay back Obama

(Monday October 27, 2008 02:51 PM)

Coldplay have become the latest act to support US Presidential candidate Barack Obama.

The band were guests on US TV over the weekend and took the opportunity to promote the Democrat politician's bid for the White House.

Singer Chris Martin played the three song set wearing a white armband emblazoned with Obama's name for the appearance on "Saturday Night Live".

He also shouted the name of John McCain's political rival at the close of the performance on the flagship US comedy programme.

As previously reported, Jay-Z will appear at a free rally for Obama in Cleveland later this week, with just days before America goes to the polls.

Manson Halloween party

(Monday October 27, 2008 12:37 AM)

Marilyn Manson is to host a Halloween party in Los Angeles later this week, it has been announced.

The infamous rock idol will act as 'Master Of Ceremonies' at the event, which takes place at the Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood.

Amongst the star's duties will be introducing a selection of DJs, to a backdrop of his own graphics and visuals.

According to reports, Manson was scheduled to perform at the bash but had to pull out because his guitarist Wes Borland is due to get married the next day.

The party takes place on Friday, October 31.

Jacko finalising tour?

(Monday October 27, 2008 12:35 AM)

Michael Jackson will play a 30-date world tour in 30 different cities next year, according to reports.

The music superstar has long been linked with a comeback to the world of pop, amid claims he will also release a new album.

He is said to have flown from his home in Los Angeles to Las Vegas earlier this month to finalise plans for the jaunt.

A fan told a UK newspaper of the plan, explaining: "Michael said he wasn't doing a Vegas residency but was going on a world tour, taking in 30 cities next year.

"He said he wanted to do it for his kids. He wants them to see what he does, and he wants to take them on the road."

In recent months, it has been claimed that Jackson plans to host extended live runs in Las Vegas and London, although nothing has been confirmed.

Perry provokes critics with mock spoon snap

(Monday October 27, 2008 12:00 AM)

Pop star Katy Perry has mocked the furore over a controversial promotional photo showing the star holding a knife up to her face - by striking a similar pose with a spoon in a new internet photo.

The I Kissed A Girl hitmaker provoked outrage in the UK after the PR snaps for her album One For The Boys surfaced last week.

She defended herself against the criticism, insisting she is "against all violence" and claimed the photo was three years old.

But she has stirred controversy by making light of the situation on her website with the spoof snap, in which she holds a spoon against her cheek, similar to the original knife picture.

The photo is accompanied by the caption: "But I do condone eating ice cream with a very large spoon."

Winehouse in hospital for chest infection, not rehab

(Monday October 27, 2008 07:30 AM)

Amy Winehouse's representative has dismissed reports the singer is in rehab, insisting her visit to a London medical centre at the weekend was for a chest infection.

The Back to Black hitmaker was taken to The London Clinic on Saturday, the same place she was treated at for her drug problems earlier this year.

The visit sparked rumours Winehouse had admitted herself into the health centre in a bid to kick her drink and drug demons once and for all.

But a spokesman for Winehouse, who was previously diagnosed with traces of deadly lung disease emphysema, has denied the claims - blaming a chest problem for the visit.

According to the Daily Mirror newspaper, the troubled star underwent precautionary scans to ensure the emphysema had not returned and is due to be discharged within days.

The rep says, "Amy is in hospital being checked out with for a chest infection. She is not back in rehab.

"She should be fine and is expected to return home soon."

Underwood: 'There's no Simpson feud'

(Sunday October 26, 2008 01:55 PM)

Country star Carrie Underwood has laughed off reports of a feud with Jessica Simpson, insisting she has nothing against the singer/actress for dating her ex Tony Romo.

The two stars were alleged to have fallen out after Underwood insinuated she was still in touch with American footballer Romo, two years after their split.

In a recent interview with Allure magazine, Underwood insisted Romo was equally keen to keep in contact, adding: "The phone will ring and it'll be him, and I'll maybe not answer."

Simpson, who has been dating Romo since late last year, subsequently hit back at Underwood's comments, claiming her boyfriend has never called his ex.

But Underwood is shrugging off reports the two are embroiled in a war of words.

She says, "I met her once and she seemed really nice so I don't have a feud with anybody."

Hudson murder suspect arrested, star's nephew still missing

(Sunday October 26, 2008 11:05 AM)

Police have arrested a suspect in the double shooting of singer/actress Jennifer Hudson's mother and brother - but the star's seven-year-old nephew who was taken from the scene of the crime is still missing.

Authorities took William Balfour, who was once married to the actress' sister Julia, into police custody on Friday after the victims were found gunned down in their Chicago, Illinois home earlier in the day.

Neighbours allegedly heard gunshots between 8am and 9am local time on the south side of the city, but emergency services weren't contacted until 3pm, when another relative, believed to be Hudson's cousin, discovered the star's 57-year-old mum Darnell Donnerson shot in the head in the living room.

Officers subsequently found the body of Jason Hudson, 29, who had died from bullet wounds to the chest, in an upstairs bedroom.

Police launched a child abduction alert after quizzing Balfour, 27, over the whereabouts of Julia's missing son Julian King, according to FOX News' Chicago affiliate.

Iglesias unhurt in plane emergency

(Tuesday October 21, 2008 08:17 PM)

Spanish pop star Enrique Iglesias has emerged unscathed after his plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

The singer was flying over the Atlantic from the US on Monday when his plane ran into trouble.

The pilot was forced to shut down one of the jet's engines, and made an emergency landing at Luton Airport.

A spokesman for Iglesias's Polydor record label confirmed that no-one was hurt.

The singer, who has had hits with Hero, Do You Know? and Don't Turn Off The Lights, is on a promotional tour of Europe after the release of his English Greatest Hits album.

His London agent said the engine troubles had happened while the singer was onboard a private plane.

He praised the pilots who brought the pop star to safety.

"The highly skilled pilots managed to make a safe landing and nobody was hurt," he said.

Boyzone apologise over MTV Awards trouble

(Tuesday October 21, 2008 02:25 PM)

Pop band Boyzone have apologised to bosses at MTV for causing trouble at a past awards ceremony - insisting they will be better behaved at this year's European Music Awards (EMAs).

The band fear they have been blacklisted by officials at the channel after the 2000 EMAs event in Dublin, which saw bandmember Shane Lynch swearing on stage and picking a drunken fight with rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs.

The singers have now issued an apology ahead of the forthcoming EMAs ceremony in Liverpool next month and hope they will be invited back.

They tell the Daily Star, "We'd like to take this opportunity to apologise to the channel. As a band we are really keen to bury the hatchet. Back in those days, Shane thought if we went prepared we wouldn't win anything.

"He'd had more than a few pints to calm his nerves. Because he was drunk he ended up effing and blinding on stage and later had a fight with P Diddy and proper slapped him on the head. That wasn't very representative of the band. He didn't show any respect and is very sorry."

Eminem not touring

(Tuesday October 21, 2008 12:37 AM)

Eminem has revealed that he doesn't envisage touring any time in the near future.

The American rapper has claimed he is "not ready" to tour at the moment, despite the forthcoming release of new album "Relapse".

"I'm not saying I will or I won't but I'm not ready to tour at least at this moment right now," he told BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe.

"I've accomplished enough with the music that I haven't had to go out there and do other things to over-saturate."

"Relapse" has been some five months in production, Eminem - real name Marshall Mathers - working with long-time cohort and mentor Dr. Dre.

In fact, Eminem has left the production duties almost entirely to Dre this time around – concentrating on his rapping instead.

"That's probably what I take pride in most," he explained.

"But, at the end of the day, it's kind of catch 22. I love the attention but I don't like too much of it."

Jury in deadlock over Britney trial

(Tuesday October 21, 2008 05:27 AM)

A second day of deliberations ended without a verdict in Britney Spears' driving-without-a-licence case.

Jurors in Los Angeles left for the day after saying earlier that they were hopelessly deadlocked.

A foreman said they had voted three times since Friday, and each time failed to reach an unanimous conclusion.

The three votes were all 10 to two, the foreman said without indicating which way.

The jurors appeared glum after lunch, with many on the panel telling Superior Court Judge James A. Steele that they did not think an agreement could be reached.

Mr Steele questioned whether more could be done to encourage discussion or reach a verdict.

Paltrow is offering Madonna support

(Monday October 20, 2008 08:26 PM)

Gwyneth Paltrow is supporting her pop star friend Madonna through her divorce, the Hollywood actress has revealed.

At the premiere of her new file Two Lovers, part of the BFI London Film Festival, the Oscar winner said: "She's a very good friend. I'm supporting her in all the ways that I can. I'm just there for her. I speak to her a lot."

The pair have a well publicised friendship and are both yoga fans as well as splitting their time between the US and UK.

Paltrow's new film, in which she stars with Joaquin Phoenix, tells the tale of a heartbroken man whose parents set him up with the daughter of a family friend.

But he meets Michelle (Paltrow) a volatile woman who has recently moved into the same apartment block.

Wearing a long black dress Paltrow, who will start work on Iron Man II next year, said she was attracted to the film because of director James Gray's European sensibilities.

But the award-winning actress said she has no intention of overworking.

She said: "I'll never do the five movies a year thing ever again but one or two good ones, I'm game."

The wife of Coldplay front man Chris Martin has launched a newsletter Goop, with lifestyle tips for fans.

Asked where the strange name came from, she said: "It means anything. GP are my initials and it's an old nickname."

Burns to get lip injections pay-out

(Monday October 20, 2008 04:03 PM)

Singer Pete Burns will receive a pay-out from a Harley Street doctor for botched lip injections.

The Eighties pop star took legal action against surgeon Dr Maurizio Viel after suffering swelling and blisters following the treatment.

He was injected with a product called Outline Original and was not adequately warned of potential side-effects, law firm Irwin Mitchell said.

Dr Viel also failed to observe guidelines about its use in conjunction with other products, and gave an excessive number of follow-up injections.

Last week the doctor's legal team told the High Court that he admitted the allegations, paving the way for a pay-out to Burns.

Auriana Griffiths, from firm Irwin Mitchell, said: "The barrister representing Dr Viel confirmed last week in court that the allegations of negligence set out in the original documents filed at court have been admitted.

"Further allegations have been added, with the permission of the court, relating to a lip lift procedure.

"At this stage, the investigation into the value of the case is ongoing and no figure has been agreed."

The singer began court proceedings in January last year.

Pink slams Royals

(Monday October 20, 2008 02:52 PM)

Pink has attacked the British Royal Family after they ignored her anti-fur and anti-hunting letters.

Five years ago the star turned down the chance to play Prince William's 21st birthday because of his documented passion for hunting.

She also wrote a letter to the Queen asking why the uniforms for the Royal Guards had to be made from real bearskin rather than a synthetic alternative.

However, over two years later she's yet to receive any response.

"It's a bit rude that they didn't reply, isn't it?," she told Live magazine.

"I don't get why we can't question people just because of their position in society. I don't care if they have a crown.

"One or two Canadian bears are killed to make each hat and that is totally unnecessary," she continued in reference to the headgear worn by the Royal Guards.

Verdict delayed in Britney's trial

(Saturday October 18, 2008 07:39 AM)

The jury in Britney Spears' trial is taking the weekend to mull whether the pop singer is guilty of driving in California without a valid licence.

Jurors left a San Fernando Valley court on Friday night after deliberating the minor charge for slightly more than two hours. With no verdict reached, the jury of eight women and four men adjourned and were told to return on Monday.

Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney Michael Amerian declined to say what punishment he would seek if Britney is convicted. She faces up to six months in jail and a fine, though her lack of a prior criminal record means a lighter penalty is likely.

Jurors are weighing whether Spears was required to have a California licence when she hit a parked car and left the scene in August 2007. Amerian contended that Spears was ostensibly a Los Angeles resident because she chose to get married here, got divorced here, and her two sons were born at LA-area hospitals.

He acknowledged on Friday that it was "extremely rare" for misdemeanour driving-without-a-licence cases to go to trial, but said that was Spears' decision and pursuit of the case was justified.

Coldplay for Knebworth?

(Friday October 17, 2008 04:12 PM)

Coldplay could soon be appearing at Knebworth House, frontman Chris Martin suggested today.

Though no date has yet been mooted for what would be one of the biggest shows of Coldplay's career, Martin told BBC Radio 1 that, "We're trying to book a place that rhymes with Blebworth."

"We realised there's a lot of people who don't like us in Britain," he continued, "but, you know, they don't have to come."

Knebworth has previously played host to Robbie Williams and, most famously, Oasis.

But though Williams managed to lure some 375,000 to Knebworth over the course of three nights, Martin has ruled out the idea of doing more than one.

"We're not gonna do three [nights], Robbie did three.

"We'd be happy with one. Then the next day can be some kind of caravan conference."

Any performance at Knebworth is likely to take place next year – until then, fans can catch the band at a series of UK arena dates planned for December.

Gallagher takes aim at 'talentless' Minogue

(Tuesday October 14, 2008 07:35 AM)

Oasis star Noel Gallagher has mocked wannabe singers for taking part in TV talent contest The X Factor - insisting their dreams will never come true.

The outspoken rocker has launched a bitter attack at superstar hopefuls who use the hit show as a platform to kick-start their music careers.

And Gallagher targets X Factor judge Dannii Minogue in his rant to BBC's Radio Times magazine, insisting she has "no talent".

He tells the publication, "If somebody is dangling fame in front of a check-out girl from Barnsley they're going to go for it because they live in a s**thole.

"You're in with a No 1 and you've got Dannii Minogue telling you you're really talented - and if there's one person who wouldn't know talent if it kicked them, it's Dannii Minogue."

He adds, "Instead of instant fame the prize ought to be, 'I'll introduce you to someone who might, if you're lucky, know a producer who'd record one of your songs."

MIA confirms pregnancy

(Tuesday October 14, 2008 06:25 AM)

Singer/rapper MIA has confirmed she's pregnant with her first child.

The star, real name Mathangi Arulpragasam, sparked rumours she is expecting a baby after appearing at a New York gig on Saturday night with a bulging belly.

Following her set, she told Pitchfork Media, "I'm creating a baby."

But MIA - who is set to marry The Exit singer/guitarist Benjamin Brewer - insists her plans for marriage came before she discovered she was having a child.

She adds, "I got engaged first, then I got pregnant, kids."

And the 31-year-old admits her baby news coincided with her single Paper Planes doing well in the charts.

She says, "When I found out I was pregnant and Paper Planes was in the iTunes top 10, it seemed like the whole world was reshuffled in one week, and all my plans went out the window.

"I've got two kids, that's what it feels like. And that's the lesson - you can't make plans."

The star is currently working on a follow-up to her latest album Kala - but insists she has to attend to some family business first: "I have to do the rounds - go see my family and show them the belly."

Madonna's condom attack

(Monday October 13, 2008 04:24 PM)

Madonna continued her campaign against Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin at a concert in New York on Saturday night (October 11).

The star was onstage at Madison Square Garden when, after performing her '80s hit "Express Yourself", she proclaimed "I'd like to express myself to Sarah Palin right now".

She then proceeded to throw handfuls of condoms emblazoned with images of John McCain's running mate into the crowd – an apparent reference to Palin's pregnant 17-year-old daughter, Bristol.

The barb came after an incident earlier in the night, where Madonna described the loud screeching of a guitar as "the sound of Sarah Palin thinking".

The pop star also told US fans last week that Palin was banned from her live concerts, while at the start of the tour she placed an image of McCain alongside photographs of Adolf Hitler and Robert Mugabe.

Marilyn Manson drug death

(Monday October 13, 2008 02:13 PM)

Gidget Gein, former bass player with Marilyn Manson, has been found dead at the age of 39.

Gein, real name Brad Stewart, was found at his home in Burbank, California last Thursday (October 9).

The LA County Coroners office are expected to issue more details once Gein's family members have been notified, but early suspicions are that the cause of death was a drugs overdose.

Gein played bass in Marilyn Manson from 1989 to 1993 before being replaced by Twiggy Ramirez.

He went on to form Gidget Gein and the Dali Gaggers before performing art and fashion shows under the name Gollywood.

Boy George Axes Gig After Sales Flop

(Monday October 13, 2008 01:25 PM)

Boy George has axed a concert on his new comeback tour - after selling less than a hundred tickets for the gig.

The former Culture Club frontman, 47, was due to perform onstage at the 2,200 capacity Portsmouth Guildhall in Hampshire on Tuesday as part of his The Boy Is Back In Town tour.

But the venue organisers have announced the gig has since been cancelled - after the star reportedly sold just 89 tickets.

Katy Perry to host MTV Music Awards

(Monday October 13, 2008 12:30 AM)

Katy Perry is to make her hosting debut at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards.

The 23-year-old old Californian musician, whose single I Kissed A Girl celebrated more than five million worldwide sales, is nominated in two categories at this year's event in Liverpool.

They are best new act and most addictive track.

It is the first time that the singer has acted as host at an awards ceremony, MTV said.

"Katy Perry has been one of the freshest and most successful new artists to emerge on the international music scene this year which is witnessed by her nomination in two categories in this year's awards," said Richard Godfrey, executive producer of this year's event.

"We want to pursue a much more informal and relaxed role for the host at this year's awards, but with a definite musical twist and we think Katy will be perfect."
