U2 have promised to deliver their "best ever album" with the imminent follow-up to "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb".
The rock icons have been working on their new record for some months, with sessions taking place in France, Morocco and Ireland.
It was expected to emerge by the end of 2008 but singer Bono has now revealed nothing is likely to come out until early next year.
However, the band's frontman told fans in a posting on their official website to expect something comparable with their best work.
"I thought a while back we might have the album wrapped by now, but why come up above ground now if there's more priceless stuff to be found?", he wrote.
'We know we have to emerge soon but we also know that people don't want another U2 album unless it is our best ever album.
"It has to be our most innovative, our most challenging…or what's the point?", Bono commented.
Amongst the material expected to feature are "Get On Your Boots", "For Your Love", "Breathe", "No Line On The Horizon" and "Moment Of Surrender".
